Spring bass fishing is about as good as bass fishing gets. The bass are hungry, aggressive and easy to catch. This is when the bass move from the depths into the warm shallow water where they will feed for the first time in months and spawn. It is also a time when hormones activated by the warmth cause some very aggressive behavior in males. They will strike your lure even if they aren’t hungry at times, simply because they won’t tolerate the presence of other fish around it, especially if they are still guarding their nest.

Bigger bass usually spawn in the deeper areas. Bass are naturally inclined to choose a rocky or gravelly spot to nest but will spawn on sand or soft bottoms if required to. Bass will start to spawn if the temperature stays around 60 for a few consecutive days, if there is a cold spell during this period they will retreat back to deep water and have to start all over again when the weather permits.

During the spawn, females will continue to feed after they have laid their eggs while the male will not. He will guard the eggs and the fry (baby bass) without eating until they are ready to go on their own. That doesn’t mean you can’t catch a male though. Simply putting a lure in its nest area may cause it to attack.

It must defend against all intruders and if that intruder is your lure then he will attack it. This may take some persistence on your part but it is a proven method. Just make sure it is legal to be fishing during the spawn in your area.

The males will guard their fry for two to three weeks, but lucky for us, their aggressive hormones will last a bit longer. When spring bass season opens, the bass will still have their super charged aggressive instincts left over from spawning which makes spring bass fishing so much fun.

Start your spring bass fishing efforts in 2-8 feet of water on the northwest banks of a lake as well as major creek arms. Look for places with lots of cover and structure. As in any time of year, bass need things to hide around to hunt effectively.

Spinner baits and jigs are my bait of choice for spring bass fishing, but crankbaits, jerkbaits and topwater poppers are also effective, just remember to retrieve them slowly – more so in the early spring then later. In the early spring, bass are still a bit sluggish. They are still shaking off the winter blues but their energy levels pick up as the water gets steadily warmer and they eat more.

While these groups kill a large number of deer, there is usually more or less dissatisfaction among the members about the division of the spoils and about who should assume the credit (or blame) for each kill. The Maine law prohibits a man from registering a deer that he has not personally killed. It also prohibits a man who has killed one deer from hunting during the remainde of the hunting season. These laws are evaded by members of many of these deer-driving groups.

Some Sailors might still get stuck in units that are not as pro-active due to leadership, that’s not my beef, I can’t do anything there; unless I was part of that unit, I could try and do something and go up the CoC. But it’s not rare to see units heading to a weapons field now these days.”

“We just hit the rifle and pistol ranges for the second time this year. We were not the only unit there as well. Couple of Drill weekends ago, our nosc set up a Beamhit and had Sailors train, one by one since ammo for 1000 something personnel isn’t cheap. As many as 10,000 est. Sailors are now on duty as we speak on deck or already on mission. About 60% of those are USN (RC) Sailors. That’s roughly 6,000 Sailors that had weapons, tactics and quails either in Fort Riley, Camp Shelby, and Fort Jackson. So now I am making a case that’s a pretty good sum of U.S Sailors getting quails.”

Arkansas, known as the Natural State, is a prime destination for whitetail bow hunting. Herd conservation practices have resulted in a very large population of these illusive creatures that makes hunting them one of the highlights of the fall and winter months. Archery season opens the first day of October and ends the last day of February, providing hunters with the longest season for hunting of any game in the state.

Whitetail bow hunting can be done in a couple of different manners. The first involves wearing camo from head to toe and spending a lot of time in a tree stand overlooking a known trail that is used by whitetails on a regular basis. The hope is that one will eventually pass within range of a bow shot and be dropped by the waiting hunter.

The second method of whitetail bow hunting is more challenging. This method, known as “still hunting” involves very slowly moving through the woods in search of whitetails.

The reason for the term “still hunting” is that it can sometimes take fifteen minutes to move five feet. The archer using this method of hunting is using every one of his senses to try and locate his prey. In a sylvan forest, this can be very difficult. Whitetails are known for their ability to hide and make use of even minimal cover to elude hunters.

In addition, whitetails have all the advantages over the hunter. They have superior hearing and a keen sense of smell that allows them to become of the presence of man long before he is aware of the deer. Visual acuity in whitetails can be limited, however, making wise use of camouflage clothing and very slow movements the ideal method of stalking a whitetail. Even though the deer is aware that a man is close, he may be fooled about the exact location until it is too late if a hunter is careful enough.

In addition to the very long season offered for whitetail bow hunting in Arkansas, some cities have become so overrun with these animals that they have opened up hunting inside the city limits provided the hunter is able to pass a proficiency test with his archery tackle to assure a safe hunt.
